If you don't have panettone, challah bread or brioche also work well in this recipe.
Be careful not to overcrowd the skillet when frying the panettone, as this can lower the oil temperature and result in soggy French toast.
The orange mascarpone sauce can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
