For an extra layer of flavor, try adding a splash of red wine to the meat sauce while it simmers. Feel free to substitute ground turkey or chicken for the sausage and sirloin. If you don't have fresh parsley and basil on hand, dried herbs can be used instead. Use about 1 teaspoon of each. To make ahead, assemble the baked ziti and refrigerate for up to 24 hours before baking. Add an extra 10-15 minutes to the baking time if baking from cold. Add any vegetables you enjoy or need to use up. Diced bell peppers, mushrooms, or spinach would all be great additions.
