Follow The Directions

01

Step
5 mins

In a blender or food processor, combine the tomatillos, jalapeños, lettuce, garlic, cilantro, cumin, salt, and pepper. Pulse until the mixture is finely chopped but still retains some texture. Avoid over-processing into a smooth puree. (5 minutes)

02

Step
5 mins

Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened and translucent, about 5 minutes. Be careful not to brown the butter. (5 minutes)

03

Step
25 mins

Pour the tomatillo mixture into the saucepan with the softened onions. Add the chicken broth and stir to combine. Bring the salsa to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low and cook, stirring occasionally, until the salsa has thickened slightly and the flavors have melded, about 20 minutes. (25 minutes)

04

Step

Taste and adjust seasonings as needed. Add more salt, pepper, or jalapeños to achieve your desired flavor profile. Serve warm or cold, as desired.

For a smoother salsa, you can peel the tomatillos before chopping. Roasting the tomatillos and jalapeños before blending will add a smoky depth of flavor. If you don't have fresh lettuce, spinach can be substituted. This salsa can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. The flavor will continue to develop as it sits.
