For a smoother soup, use an immersion blender to partially blend the soup before serving. Be careful not to over-blend, as you still want some texture. If you don't have a ham bone, you can use smoked ham hocks or diced ham instead. Adjust the amount of salt accordingly. The soup will thicken as it cools. If it becomes too thick, add more water or broth to reach your desired consistency.
