Follow The Directions

01

Step

Rub the chicken thighs generously with lemon wedges, ensuring every surface is coated. (2 minutes)

02

Step

In a large Dutch oven or lidded skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic and cook until softened and fragrant, about 5 minutes. (7 minutes)

03

Step

Add the chicken thighs to the pot and brown on all sides, creating a rich, golden crust. This should take approximately 5 to 10 minutes. (17 minutes)

04

Step

Pour the white wine over the chicken, allowing it to deglaze the pot and lift any browned bits from the bottom. Add the crushed tomatoes, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, sugar, salt, and pepper. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. (5 minutes)

05

Step

Cover the Dutch oven and reduce the heat to low. Simmer gently until the chicken is incredibly tender and easily pulls apart, about 45 minutes to 1 hour. (60 minutes)

For an even deeper flavor, marinate the chicken with lemon juice and spices for at least 30 minutes, or up to overnight, in the refrigerator.
If you prefer a thicker sauce, remove the chicken from the pot after simmering and set aside. Increase the heat to medium-high and simmer the sauce, uncovered, until it reaches your desired consistency.
Garnish with a sprinkle of fresh parsley or chopped cilantro before serving for a pop of color and freshness.

I used chicken breasts instead of thighs, and it still turned out great. Just adjust the cooking time.

I didn't have any white wine on hand, so I used chicken broth. It worked perfectly!
