Follow The Directions

01

Step
1 hrs 30 mins

Combine Ingredients (90 minutes): Place sourdough starter, egg, 2 tablespoons softened butter, flour, raisins, 2 tablespoons sugar, and salt in a bread machine in the order recommended by your machine's manufacturer. Run the 'Dough' cycle. Once the cycle is complete, remove the dough from the machine.

02

Step
8 hrs

First Rise (8 hours to Overnight): Gently place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, turning to coat. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and place in a warm, draft-free location. Allow the dough to rise until doubled in size, typically 8 hours or overnight.

03

Step
5 mins

Prepare Cinnamon Sugar: In a small bowl, thoroughly mix the 2 tablespoons of sugar and cinnamon until well combined.

04

Step
1 hrs

Shape and Second Rise (1 hour): Turn the risen dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Using a rolling pin, roll the dough into a 9-inch wide rectangle, about 1/2-inch thick. Brush the surface of the dough with milk. Sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture evenly over the milk-brushed dough. Starting from one of the shorter ends, tightly roll the dough into a log. Place the log, seam-side down, in a greased 9x5-inch loaf pan. Cover loosely and let rise until the dough is at least 1 inch above the rim of the pan.

05

Step
10 mins

Preheat Oven (10 minutes): Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

06

Step
45 mins

Bake (45 minutes): Bake the loaf in the preheated oven until it is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom. Let cool completely on a wire rack before slicing and serving.

For a richer flavor, try using brown butter instead of regular melted butter.
Soaking the raisins in warm water or rum for 30 minutes before adding them to the dough will plump them up and add extra moisture.
If your kitchen is cold, you can create a warm environment for rising by placing the dough in an oven preheated to 170°F (77°C) for 15 minutes, then turn the oven OFF.
Brush the top of the baked loaf with melted butter or a simple sugar glaze for added shine and sweetness.
