Follow The Directions

01

Step

Prepare the Dough (5 minutes): In a large bowl, combine the lukewarm water and yeast. Let stand for 5 minutes, or until the yeast has dissolved and become foamy.

02

Step

Combine Ingredients (10 minutes): Add the sugar, shortening, and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir in the egg until well combined. Gradually mix in half of the flour, then add the remaining flour until a soft dough forms.

03

Step

First Rise (8 hours - Overnight): Transfer the dough to a well-greased bowl, turning to coat. Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator to rise for at least 8 hours, or preferably overnight.

04

Step

Shape the Rolls (20 minutes): Remove the dough from the refrigerator and gently punch it down. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough into a large rectangle, approximately 18x12 inches. Spread the softened butter evenly over the dough, leaving a 1-inch strip along one of the long edges dry.

05

Step

Add Filling (5 minutes): In a separate bowl, combine the brown sugar, white sugar, cinnamon, and cloves. Sprinkle the mixture evenly over the buttered dough, avoiding the 1-inch border.

06

Step

Roll and Cut (10 minutes): Starting from the long edge opposite the dry border, tightly roll the dough up into a log. Use a sharp knife or unflavored dental floss to cut the log into 1-inch thick rolls.

07

Step

Second Rise (1 hour): Place the rolls in a greased baking pan, leaving some space between each roll. Cover loosely with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

08

Step

Bake (20 minutes): Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.

09

Step

Frost (5 minutes): While the rolls are still warm, spread generously with cream cheese frosting. Serve immediately and enjoy!

For an extra rich flavor, try using brown butter instead of softened butter in the filling.
If you don't have time for an overnight rise, you can let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
Feel free to experiment with different frostings, such as a vanilla glaze or a maple cream cheese frosting.
To ensure even baking, rotate the pan halfway through the baking time.
