Recipe View In a large bowl, cream together the sugar, shortening, baking powder, and nutmeg until light and fluffy. (5 minutes)

Recipe View In a separate bowl, lightly beat the eggs and add them to the creamed mixture, mixing well. (2 minutes)

Recipe View In a small bowl, combine the milk and baking soda. Add this mixture to the wet ingredients and stir to combine. (1 minute)

Recipe View Gradually add the flour, starting with 5 cups, mixing until a soft dough forms. You may need to add up to 4 additional cups of flour, depending on humidity, until the dough is no longer sticky and can be easily rolled out. If using a mixer, switch to hand-mixing as the dough thickens. (10-15 minutes)

Recipe View Lightly flour a clean work surface and your rolling pin. Also, dust the top of the dough with flour. If the dough is too soft to handle, wrap it in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 15-30 minutes before rolling. (30 minutes)

Recipe View Roll out the dough to a thickness of about 1/4 inch. Cut out cookies using your favorite cookie cutters and place them on ungreased baking sheets, leaving some space between each cookie. (20 minutes)

Recipe View Bake in a preheated oven at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are very lightly golden brown. (8-10 minutes)
