Follow The Directions

01

Step

In a medium saucepan, combine the carrots, pears, water, sugar (or maple syrup), cinnamon, and nutmeg (if using). (2 minutes)

02

Step

Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat, then reduce heat to low, cover, and cook until the carrots and pears are completely tender and easily pierced with a fork. (15-20 minutes)

03

Step

Remove from heat and allow the mixture to cool slightly. (5 minutes)

04

Step

Transfer the mixture to a blender or food processor and puree until smooth and silky. For an extra smooth texture, pass the puree through a fine-mesh sieve. (3 minutes)

05

Step

Stir in the lemon juice (if using) to brighten the flavor. (1 minute)

06

Step

Taste and adjust sweetness or spice levels as needed. Serve warm or chilled.

For a richer flavor, try roasting the carrots and pears before pureeing. Toss with a little olive oil and roast at 400°F (200°C) for about 20 minutes, or until tender and slightly caramelized.
This sauce can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, or frozen for longer storage.
Experiment with different spices! Ginger, cardamom, or even a tiny pinch of cayenne pepper can add interesting layers of flavor.
For babies, omit the sugar or maple syrup entirely. The natural sweetness of the carrots and pears should be sufficient.
