For extra flavor, try adding a pinch of ground cinnamon or nutmeg to the dry ingredients. If you don't have buttermilk, you can make a substitute by adding 1 tablespoon of white vinegar or lemon juice to a measuring cup and then filling it with milk to reach 3/4 cup.
