Step

In a mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour and whole wheat flour. Sprinkle salt evenly over the flour mixture. Add melted butter, sugar, garlic powder, and dried herbs. Blend ingredients together using your fingertips until well combined. Gradually add water, mixing by hand until a soft dough forms. (5 minutes)

Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until it becomes smooth and elastic. This should take approximately 7 minutes. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes.

After resting, divide the dough into 8 equal portions. Shape each portion into a smooth ball and then lightly flatten each ball. Dust with flour and roll each into thin circles, approximately 1/16-inch thick and 7 inches in diameter. (20 minutes)

Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Carefully place each dough circle into the hot oil and fry until golden brown, about 2 minutes per side. Once cooked, remove and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil. (16 minutes)

For a richer flavor, try using ghee (clarified butter) instead of regular oil for frying.
Experiment with different herbs and spices in the dough, such as cumin, coriander, or chili powder, to customize the flavor to your liking.
Parathas are best served warm. If making ahead, reheat in a dry skillet or microwave before serving.
