Follow The Directions

01

Step

Pour the chilled heavy cream into the clean canning jar and securely fasten the lid. (1 minute)

02

Step

Shake the jar vigorously and continuously. At first, the cream will thicken into whipped cream. Continue shaking! (15-20 minutes)

03

Step

As you persist, the whipped cream will begin to separate. You'll notice a distinct separation of buttermilk from a solid mass of butter. Keep going! (5-10 minutes)

04

Step

Carefully pour the contents of the jar into a fine-mesh strainer, positioned over a bowl. This will separate the buttermilk from the solid butter. (2 minutes)

05

Step

Gently press the butter in the strainer to remove any remaining buttermilk. Shape the butter into a log or desired form, wrap tightly in plastic wrap or parchment paper, and refrigerate until firm. (5 minutes)

For best results, ensure your heavy cream is very cold. A chilled jar can also help.
Don't be discouraged if it takes longer than expected! The time can vary based on cream temperature and shaking intensity.
Experiment with adding a pinch of sea salt to the cream before shaking for a lightly salted butter.
Use the freshly strained buttermilk in pancakes, waffles, or biscuits for added flavor and tang.
Homemade butter is best enjoyed within 1-2 weeks when stored properly in the refrigerator.
