For an extra layer of flavor, try browning the mushroom soup in a pan before adding it to the other ingredients. If you don't have Swiss cheese, Gruyere or Emmental are excellent substitutes. Adjust the amount of garlic salt to your preference. A dash of onion powder can also add a nice depth of flavor. To prevent the French-fried onions from burning, you can tent the casserole with foil during the last few minutes of baking.
