Follow The Directions

01

Step

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch pan. (5 minutes)

02

Step

Sift cocoa, flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt together in a bowl and set aside. (5 minutes)

03

Step

In a separate small bowl, combine buttermilk with sauerkraut and set aside. (2 minutes)

04

Step

In a large bowl, cream butter, brown sugar and vanilla until light and fluffy using a mixer. (5 minutes)

05

Step

Add eggs, one at a time, and beat well after each addition. (2 minutes)

06

Step

Gradually add flour mixture alternately with sauerkraut mixture to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Beat only until just combined. Do not overmix. (5 minutes)

07

Step

Pour batter into prepared 9x13 inch pan. (1 minute)

08

Step

Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. (45 minutes)

09

Step

Cool cake completely in pan on a wire rack before frosting with your favorite chocolate frosting. (60 minutes)

For an enhanced flavor, consider using dark chocolate cocoa powder.
Ensure sauerkraut is well-drained and finely chopped to prevent a chunky texture.
To prevent sticking, line the bottom of the pan with parchment paper in addition to greasing and flouring.
A cream cheese frosting also pairs wonderfully with this cake.
