Follow The Directions

01

Step

Butter a 9x13-inch baking dish generously. Arrange challah pieces evenly in the prepared dish. (5 minutes)

02

Step

In a small bowl, combine 1/4 cup of the granulated sugar with the cinnamon. Set aside for topping. (2 minutes)

03

Step

In a large bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, remaining 1/2 cup granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until well combined. (3 minutes)

04

Step

Pour the milk mixture evenly over the challah bread in the baking dish. Distribute the butter pieces evenly over the top of the soaked bread. Sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture generously over the entire surface. (5 minutes)

05

Step

Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil and refrigerate for at least 8 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the challah to soak up the custard. (8 hours - overnight)

06

Step

When ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). (15 minutes)

07

Step

Remove the foil from the baking dish and bake in the preheated oven until the French toast is puffed and golden brown, approximately 30 to 45 minutes. A knife inserted into the center should come out relatively clean. (30-45 minutes)

08

Step

Remove from the oven and let stand for a few minutes before serving. Slice and serve warm with your favorite toppings.

For an extra touch of flavor, try adding a splash of orange zest to the milk mixture.
Feel free to use different types of bread, such as brioche or croissants, if you don't have challah on hand.
Serve with warm maple syrup, fresh berries, whipped cream, or a dusting of powdered sugar.
Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently in the oven or microwave before serving.

I used brioche bread instead of challah because that is what I had and it was amazing!

Be sure to really let the bread soak in the custard overnight. The longer it soaks, the better the texture.

I made this for a brunch party, and it was a huge hit. So easy to make ahead!
